comfort zone

this is something i wrote last year on another blog that has since been deleted. i kept all the posts from that blog, just in case i ever wanted to post them over here. i had something else planned for this week (that was supposed to go up on sunday), but i’m really struggling to get my thoughts into words on this particular subject. so while i try to figure that out, i give you this. it’s one of my favorites from the old blog :)

“a dream is your creative vision for your life in the future. you must break out of your current comfort zone and become comfortable with the unfamiliar and the unknown” — denis waitley

to me, this quote means that in order to achieve your dreams, you have to be open to change. without change, we can’t have any progress, and we need progress to be able to reach our goals. yeah, change can be terrifying. but it can also be the best thing for you.

one of the reasons i decided to start this blog is because i’m trying to do more things to challenge myself this year. i’m not an english major, and i’ve definitely never considered myself a writer. i always did fairly well in english, but i’ve never been comfortable sharing my writing with others. maybe it’s just a “you are your worst critic” type thing. i don’t know. anyway, i’m going to give this a try because what do i have to lose? i’m not trying to be a professional blogger or writer at all, i just feel like trying something new and giving myself another creative outlet.

i mentioned this in a video before, but if there’s something that you want to do, but you’re scared because it’s out of your comfort zone or you don’t have the skills you need, take the time to acquire those skills. everything is scary and unknown at first. but the more you practice, the better you get. you just have to put yourself out there and do it. and maybe you’ll find out you don’t actually like what you thought you liked. that’s okay too. then you can move on from that and work towards finding something that’s better for you. and wouldn’t you rather try and fail than never try and always wonder what could have happened?

if you’re reading this, i encourage you to go do something out of your comfort zone this week. you’d be amazed at how great it feels to do something you thought you’d never actually be brave enough to do. (just make sure it’s something good and not illegal, i’m not trying to promote violence here)
